Quaker worship

For when I came into the silent assemblies of God's people, I felt a secret power among them which touched my heart; and as I gave way unto it, I found the evil weakening in me and the good raised up.

Quaker worship is distinctive from other forms of Christian worship, because no matter the orientation, Friends almost always include a period of silence in their services; some Quaker worship is grounded entirely in silent "waiting upon the Lord."

In the noisy rush of modern life, we need periods of quiet when the soul may feed in peace on that which shall nourish it for action.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Read this brief guide before your first meeting for worship. You're encouraged to contact the clerk of the meeting at the number listed, but you can just show up.

There are roughly four streams of Quakerism, with two main ways of worship:
silent, waiting worship and programmed worship. Both styles of worship can be found worldwide, but the organizational centers are found in certain regions.

Silent, waiting worship (or traditional, unprogrammed) is perhaps most notable for its distinctiveness, and practiced by Quakers in two non-pastoral streams of the Society of Friends (ie, they don't hire a pastoral minister to lead, and all pastoral functions are carried by volunteers in the meeting):
Conservative Friends and
Friends General Conference.

Their organizational centers are found in Ohio and North Carolina, for Conservative Friends, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for FGC Friends.

FGC is the predominant orientation of Quaker meetings in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Programmed worship is practiced by Quakers in two other (mostly) pastoral streams of Friends (ie, they tend to hire a pastoral minister for leading worship, visiting the sick and providing counseling to members):
Friends United Meeting and
Evangelical Friends International.

FUM is centered Richmond, Indiana, and in Kisumu, Kenya, while EFI has no central organizational office, but regional offices.

Some Quakers in Greater Cincinnati have ties to Friends United Meeting.

Some Friends meetings offer a blend of the two styles of worship and organization, with semi-programmed worship, or mostly programmed worship, with an occasional meeting for silent, waiting worship.

Friends' Testimonies

What is a "testimony"?
Quaker testimonies are an expression of
"spirituality in action."

In 1947, the Religious Society of Friends was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize.
The peace testimony of Friends is their best known "testimony."

The Testimonies are not a formal, static set of words or rules for living, but rather a shared view of how many Quakers relate to God and the world.

The Testimonies are interrelated,
arising from experiences of faith
and a commitment to living lives according to scripture and the teachings of Jesus
as recorded in the Bible
(spoken then),
and as revealed through prayer
by the Holy Spirit or Risen Christ
(speaking today).

The testimonies have not always been consistent, but throughout their history they have challenged Friends and provided them guidance.

The list of testimonies is, like all aspects of Friends theology, continuously evolving — so as to be relevant to today, but the following are common:

Peace
Equality
Integrity (or sometimes Truth)
Simplicity

Some Friends also include other testimonies, such as Unity, Community, Compassion, Justice, Truth, Stewardship and Sustainability.

In the USA, Children and Friends school students are often taught the acronym SPICES, which stands for Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship.

Simplicity - plain living

Jesus said: Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? -- Mt 6:25

Friends, from the beginning, have embraced simplicity of life, while living in the world (rather than living separately from the world, in 'a life apart' as the Shakers and Amish chose to do).

Richard Foster's book, Freedom of Simplicity, provides a way to rethink our priorities and to "seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness." (Mt 6:33)

Friends today continue to seek simplicity for a variety of reasons, including:

spiritual: leaving space for God, and avoiding unhealthy attachments that distract us from divine guidance. ex: shedding excess belongings to allow more time & space in our home & life for prayer, community, and service.

justice & charity: sharing resources with the world's poorest, 'living simply that others may simply live'. ex: choosing to be vegetarian or to recycle, to purchase fair trade products &/or boycott companies that use unfair labor practicies, or to consume fewer resources.

modesty: taking away the occasion for war and crime by not creating rivalries and jealousy. ex: avoiding conspicuous consumption, which can lead to conflict and even war.

PEACEMAKING AND NON-VIOLENCE

Quakers take to heart the words of Jesus:

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God. --Matthew 5:9

Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. --Luke 6:35

As a consequence, Early Friends refused to serve in the military:

We utterly deny all outward wars and strife and fightings with outward weapons, for any end or under any pretence whatsoever.
--George Fox

Even though the US does not currently have a military draft, conscientious objection is common among Friends today.

Integrity - truth & responsibility

Jesus said: Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. --Mt 5:37

Are you honest and truthful in all you say and do?
Do you maintain strict integrity in business transactions and in your dealings with individuals and organizations?
Do you use money and information entrusted to you with discretion and responsibility?
Taking oaths implies a double standard of truth; in choosing to affirm instead, be aware of the claim to integrity that you are making.

The Testimony or Evidence of Integrity includes such practices as. . .
+ making sure that one's words and actions flow from one's beliefs
+ speaking the truth, even when it is difficult
+ paying people fair wages for their work
+ giving one's employer the right amount of labor for one's pay
+ saying difficult things with grace and tact
+ receiving difficult sayings gracefully
+ guarding one's reputation for honesty, fairness, and fidelity
+ taking responsibility for one's actions and their results
+ fulfilling one's commitments
+ taking care of items entrusted to one
+ being open to the ideas of others but not being too easily swayed by them
+ confronting lapses in integrity in oneself and in others
+ giving credit to others for their contributions
+ assessing people and situations fairly and accurately
+ avoiding spending beyond one's means through the use of credit

Community - care & compassion for all

Jesus said: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35

St. Paul writes: Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. --Romans 12:10

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. --Eph 4:2

I appeal to you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. --1 Cor 1:10

RELATIONSHIPS & COMMUNITY
Quakers have long valued the importance of building relationships to overcome human challenges and establish peace.

QUAKER DECISION MAKING
Quakers value the unique perspective of each individual and invite input from each member. When making decisions, they seek unity, rather than taking a vote.

AFSC, the American Friends Service Committee, is one example of an organization founded on the importance of community and relationships. After the world wars, Quakers sent young volunteers to provide relief and rebuild Europe, relying on one-to-one encounters with soldiers and victims alike, reaching out to those on both sides of the armed conflict, to bring peace.

Sharing time and resources, listening and learning are at the heart of community life for Friends. Music and singing often brings Friends together in community gatherings. Potlucks or pitch-ins are a regular feature of Quaker meetings, where Friends come together to eat, talk, celebrate, mourn, and play together!

Equality - respect for all

St. Paul writes: The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. --1 Cor 12:12

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. --Rom 12:4-6

There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. -- Gal 3:28

The Quaker testimony of equality holds that all people are equally valuable and precious in God's sight and should be treated with respect, regardless of gender, disability, sexual orientation, race, age, or any characteristic.

QUAKERS AND FREEDOM
One expression of the testimony of equality was Quaker leadership and widespread participation in the Underground Railroad, to ensure freedom and safety for people of all races. Quakers were also active in the women's suffrage movement, and the civil rights movement. A perhaps lesser-known expression of this testimony is intergenerational: treating children with respect (ie, regardless of age).

Stewardship - conservation & care of our planet

The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. --Ps 24:1

WE ARE CALLED to live in right relationship with all Creation, recognizing that the entire world is interconnected and is a manifestation of God.
WE WORK to integrate into the beliefs and practices of the Religious Society of Friends the Truth that God's Creation is to be respected, protected, and held in reverence in its own right, and the Truth that human aspirations for peace and justice depend upon restoring the earth's ecological integrity.
WE PROMOTE these Truths by being patterns and examples, by communicating our message, and by providing spiritual and material support to those engaged in the compelling task of transforming our relationship to the earth.

Emerging Churches - What Are They?

Emerging churches are communities that practice the way of Jesus within postmodern cultures.

This definition encompasses nine practices.

Emerging churches:
(1) identify with the life of Jesus,
(2) transform the secular realm, and
(3) live highly communal lives.

Because of these three activities, they
(4) welcome the stranger,
(5) serve with generosity,
(6) participate as producers,
(7) create as created beings,
(8) lead as a body, and
(9) take part in spiritual activities.

Following are five themes that characterize the emerging movement.

ii. postmodern
iii. praxis-oriented
iv. post-evangelical
v. political

The Enquirer's special report on crime within the city covers several programs that try to steer young men out of the crossfire.

Mercy and hope

On the cross and in his agony, our Lord suffered not just our physical afflictions, but our mental anguish as well. Out of the depths we cry to him, and he reaches down into our depths to raise us up with him. God knows the depth of our suffering. He knows our fragile heart. And Christ's own heart, a heart of flesh, a heart both human and divine, is merciful beyond measure. It is in this mercy that we place our hope. Quaker children and youth

Underlying all the children’s activities in a Friends meeting are the Quaker values of respect, equality, truth, simplicity and peace.

Some "queries" on children, youth, families and parenting:
Do we see our young people as individuals we want to know and care for and do we want to provide opportunities when they can get to know and care for us?
Are they encouraged to feel that they have much to give us, that we value them and are the poorer without the insights and questioning they provide?
Are we across all the ages a community learning together?
